PRESIDENT’S PEN
First off, I would like to thank everyone in attendance at this year’s annual CWA Day. The weather cooperated with us and it was an enjoyable day by all accounts.
Day by day our union is getting stronger and stronger and I personally want to thank every one of my officers, stewards, committee chairs and committee members for all of the hard work that you do on a regular basis for this local. This is such a great group and every little bit added to it makes it that much stronger. I want to personally thank both Kevin O’Connor in the NYSUT NYC Legal Office and Aaron Bifaro in the NYSUT HQ Travel & Conference Services, for both stepping up to take on the role of stewards for their areas. A strong steward base is a must for the local to do its job effectively. Back in the day we tried to have a steward in each department and I want to stress the importance of that, whether UUP, NYSNA or NYSUT, we need to fill those holes.
I also want to talk about
us for a minute. When I say us, I mean all of our union brothers and sisters
both in Local 1141 and outside. We represent a segment of organized labor
within our workplaces. This means that we need to look out for one another,
both in this local and outside to other locals. I know that tensions can run
high in various offices both with our own jobs and the jobs of others.
Remember also, we are not managers, we are unionists. If you have a problem
with a co-worker who is a unionist, bring your concerns directly to that
co-worker, not to a manager. If you have done this and you are still having
problems, notify your shop steward and set up a meeting with the parties
involved. If the concern is regarding someone covered by a different
collective bargaining agreement (contract), please keep in mind that their
benefits may be different from yours. What you may think is an issue may
very well be something that is provided to them through their own contract.
Regardless, we need to work these internal matters out from within, and by
doing so, we will send the message of strength through solidarity, both to
our management as well as our fellow unionists. Don’t get frustrated, don’t
get mad, let’s work it out together, that’s what we do, we’re unionists! |
